How involved should you be as a project manager?

As a project manager, it is sometimes difficult to get the right balance between being over or under involved in a project, especially when you’re on a deadline and tasks just never seem to be completed.
So how do you know if you’re taking on too much of the day-to-day work? Hopefully these five indicators will help.
You find yourself asking your team for updates throughout the day and going over any work they produce with a fine toothed comb. You often find yourself re-doing work that your team has completed.
Project deadlines are slipping
You don’t have time to spend managing the project, so you find deadlines are either hit at the absolute last minute or are missed. You might also find that you’re constantly having to reschedule tasks as there is not enough time to complete them.
Updating documentation is happening at the last minute or not at all
Project documentation is falling further and further behind and the information you are providing to stakeholders and team members is frequently out of date.
Your team ask you more about tasks you’re working on rather than the project as a whole
Rather than providing your team with updates on the project as a whole, your updates consist of discussions around day-to-day happenings and task progress.
Under-utilised team members
Some of your team members have little or no work to do once you start helping with their tasks.
As the project manager, your job is to focus on the project as a whole, making sure everything is delivered as per the business case, not on doing the actual project tasks. When things get a bit hairy the best thing you can do is provide the strategic direction and leadership around what is and is not important to ensure the project meets its goals. A key part of this is prioritising what you do based on the activities that directly impact on the biggest outcome.
