Those benefits may themselves have further sub-benefits. This can be represented as a tree of benefits.\r\n<h4>Benefit target<\/h4>\r\nA benefit must have a clearly defined target that can be measured. Here are some example targets:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Reduce costs by 25%<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Increase output by 500 units per month<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Reduce carbon footprint to 20000 tonnes CO<sub>2<\/sub> per annum<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h4>Benefit baseline<\/h4>\r\nThe benefit baseline is the starting value relative to the target. For the examples above the baseline values may be:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>The starting cost reduction is 0%<\/li>\r\n \t<li>The starting output is 100 units per month<\/li>\r\n \t<li>The starting carbon footprint is 50000 tonnes CO<sub>2<\/sub> per annum<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h4>Aggregation<\/h4>\r\nSometimes it is possible to directly calculate a benefit&#8217;s current value based on the values of it&#8217;s sub-benefits. This is called aggregation.\r\n\r\nThere are a number of different ways to aggregate:\r\n<table>\r\n<tbody>\r\n<tr>\r\n<th scope=\"col\">Aggregation<\/th>\r\n<th scope=\"col\">Description<\/th>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>None<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>No aggregation, i.e. this benefit&#8217;s current value is entered manually<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>Count<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>Count the number of sub-benefits<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>Sum<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>Sum together the current values of all the sub-benefits<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>Average<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>Calculate the average of the current values of all the sub-benefits<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>Minimum<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>Calculate the minimum of the current values of all the sub-benefits<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>Maximum<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>Calculate the maximum of the current values of all the sub-benefits<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>Multiply<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>Multiply together the current values of all the sub-benefits<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td><strong>Expression<\/strong><\/td>\r\n<td>Use an expression to calculate this benefit\\&#8217;s current value based on the values of it\\&#8217;s sub-benefits.<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n<h4>Expression<\/h4>\r\nAn expression can be used to perform an arbitrary calculation on the values of the sub-benefits to determine the current value for a benefit.\r\n\r\nBefore you can use an expression you must set a <strong>codename<\/strong> for each sub-benefit you want to include in the expression. A codename is similar to a variable name in most programming languages. It must start with either an underscore, a lower-case letter or an upper-case letter. The rest of the codename can contain underscores\r\n\r\nBelow is an example expression:\r\n\r\n$a+$b\r\n\r\nIn this example that are two sub-benefits with codenames &#8220;a&#8221; and &#8220;b&#8221;. (Remember to put a $ in front of your codename in the expression.) This expression adds the current values of benefit &#8220;a&#8221; and benefit &#8220;b&#8221; together.\r\n\r\nHere is a more complex example:\r\n\r\n100*($a\/$b)\r\n\r\nThis example calculates the percentage of benefit &#8220;a&#8221; relative to benefit &#8220;b&#8221;.\r\n<h4>Adding benefits<\/h4>\r\nA benefit can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psoda.com\/images\/icons\/darkgrey\/new.svg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"icons_img alignnone size-full wp-image-82\" src=\"https:\/\/www.psoda.com\/images\/icons\/darkgrey\/new.svg\" alt=\"Add icon\" width=\"21\" height=\"17\" \/><\/a>added from the <a href=\"\/help\/a50\">organisation<\/a>, <a href=\"\/help\/a60\">programme<\/a>, <a href=\"\/help\/a100\">project<\/a> or <a href=\"\/help\/a490\">sub-project<\/a> view pages. You can also add a sub-benefit (or sub-goal) to an existing benefit.\r\n<h4>Linking benefits<\/h4>\r\nBenefits can be <a href=\"\/help\/a655\">linked<\/a> together to form additional networks, for example linking a <a href=\"\/help\/a100\">project<\/a>-level benefit as a sub-benefit to a <a href=\"\/help\/a60\">programme<\/a>-level benefit. The linked benefits can then participate in any aggregation calculations.\r\n\r\nBenefits should not be linked in a circular network. This could potentially cause an infinite loop.
