What the world would be like if project management didn’t exist

This week I wanted to do something a bit different so imagined what the world would be like if there was no such thing as project management.

If this was the case, there’s a good chance that civilisation as we know it today wouldn’t exist and it’s very likely that the human population would be extinct.

Why do I say that?

Without lessons learned, there would be no way for us to know which plants were poisonous and which were safe to eat. We wouldn’t know which routes were safe to travel and which were not.

Without governance, there would be no overarching laws and regulations about how society should function. There may be small communities that function in an ad hoc way but there would be no cohesion.

Without planning, there would be no towns, cities or cohesive infrastructure, meaning communities would be unable to grow, if they existed at all. Imagine a world without Gaudi architecture, the pyramids or the Suez Canal.

Without resource management, there would be no industry, no large scale commercial farming or fishing, no internet and no space travel.

Without budget management, any project that costs more than a person’s individual income would be impossible.

Given the examples above, I think it’s safe to say that project management makes the world a better place, and that means humble project managers should be regarded as everyday heroes!
