How to ride the project management trends wave

Psoda Extreme Project Management - Confident surfer riding the wave of documents

As a project manager, it’s really important to keep up to date with the latest trends, not just in your own particular industry, but across project management in general.

There’s nothing worse than being blindsided by a sponsor asking about a new methodology or news snippet and having no idea what they’re talking about.

So how do you keep up to date when you’re busy running projects? Here’s some quick tips to help

  1. Blogs

There are some brilliant project management related blogs that are regularly updated and have strong and relevant content. Some of my favourites are:

and of course

  1. Twitter

If you’re not on Twitter you should seriously consider joining up as there is a huge amount of project management information available there. From links to the most recent articles to scheduled global chats using a specific hashtag. Some of the best project management hashtags to follow are:

And if you’re not already following us on Twitter, please do so – we aim to share useful and interesting information on the latest project management trends, find us here:

  1. Podcasts

Podcasts are a great way to learn and keep up to date when on the go. I’ll often listen to one on my way to and from work. I regularly listen to:

  1. Project management networking events

Most chapters of the Project Management Institute (PMI) and Prince2 user groups have regular networking events. These are a great way to meet other project managers and have a bit of mutual bonding and information sharing while enjoying a good speaker and a drink (or two).

  1. Project management conferences

Attending one of the premier project management conferences is an ideal way to gain a lot of knowledge in a very short period of time, but it can be expensive to attend the whole conference especially if you include some of the workshops.

If you want to stay relevant and up to date within the project management community, you need to make some time in your very busy schedules to learn some knew things. Or even better – gather some details about a new trend and present it at your next project management chapter’s meeting.
